What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by medications, alcohol, over consumption of toxins, bacterial or viral infections.

One can get infected with Autoimmune hepatitis also. This condition occurs when our body makes antibodies against liver tissue.

Type of Hepatitis

There are 5 types : A, B, C, D and E. Treatment varies on what type of Hepatitis you suffer from. A different virus is responsible for each type of Hepatitis.

Hepatitis A

This type is caused by an infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV)

This infection is often spread due to poor sanitation or when hands are not washed thoroughly.

It usually happens when a person consumes foods or drinks contaminated with bodily waste or faeces from a person infected with Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B

Type B is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B is spread through contact with person infected with Hepatitis B through blood, vaginal secretions, or semen.

Use of Injection drugs, having sexual activity with an infected person, or using razors used before by an Infected person are normally reasons for quick spread of the disease.

Hepatitis C

Type C is a caused by infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids with an infected Hepatitis C person, through injection drug use and sex.

Without proper treatment, the disease can cause liver disease and liver cancer/.

Hepatitis D

Type D also known as Hepatitis Delta is caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV). This disease is rare form of infection that only affects people who have hepatitis B.

The disease is transmitted through direct contact with infected person’s blood

Hepatitis E

Type E is caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). Hepatitis E is waterborne disease and found in areas with poor sanitation.

A person gets infected from water supply contaminated with fecal matter.
